Microsoft’s Windows 7 Support Life Cycle Will End Next Year

In today’s business world, it’s incredibly important to stay on top of all the latest technological advances. At MeloTel, we understand that not every business owner is tech savvy. However, that doesn’t mean one should be unaware of tech news. Some very important industry information has recently come out and we thought it was worthwhile to share it with you. Office managers will especially find this news worthy of their attention.

Microsoft has announced their discontinuation of support to all versions of Windows 7.  The specific end of support day for Windows 7 will be January 14, 2020. As a result, Microsoft is urging all users to move forward to their flagship OS Windows 10. Although the end-of-life date is still a year away, migrating to a new platform will require some careful planning and preparation.

Most software applications running in Windows 7 will continue to run with Windows 10.

However, legacy applications may not be the case and require special attention during this migration process. To adequately prepare for this platform migration, MeloTel is encouraging its clients to prepare for a “blend-in” schedule. The schedule will involve deployment, new hardware acquisition and software testing in order to ensure the process will be as smooth as possible and that functionalities run as expected before Windows 7 end of life.

Microsoft’s news may be disheartening to many users. However, it shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise. Originally, Microsoft made a commitment to provide at least 10 years of product support for Windows 7. It was released back on October 22, 2009. With the 10-year period coming to a close this year, Microsoft plans on discontinuing Windows 7 support so that it can focus its investment on supporting newer technologies and great new experiences.

Don’t hesitate on making the move to Windows 10.

At MeloTel, we highly recommend that you move to Windows 10 well in advance of January 14, 2020. When that date arrives, Microsoft will no longer offer technical assistance and automatic updates for Windows 7 that will help protect your PC. Naturally, it will be in your best interests to avoid a situation where you need service or support that is no longer available.

“All good things must come to an end, even Windows 7,” Microsoft exclaims on their website, “After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7. But you can keep the good times rolling by moving to Windows 10.” The formal announcement also includes a question and answer segment that you’ll likely find very worthwhile.

Among the questions is “What happens if I continue to use Windows 7?”

“You can continue to use Windows 7, but once support ends, your PC will become more vulnerable to security risks,” answers Microsoft, “Windows will operate but you will stop receiving security and feature updates.”
