By now, you’re certainly no stranger to the world of social media. Whether for personal or professional use, it’s wise to have Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn accounts, at the very least. Why? If you want to build brand awareness, taking to social media is the top way to drive engagement these days. However, crafting the perfect post can be tricky.
Last summer, our blog offered up some do’s and don’ts of promoting your business on social media. Today, we’ll revisit the topic of how to carefully craft social media posts with the following do’s and don’ts.
DO keep your content consistent and on-brand.
Consistency is crucial in branding. Your posts should reflect your company’s values, tone and visual style. Is your brand fun and playful? Or is it professional and authoritative? Staying consistent helps build trust and recognition with your audience. It’s a good idea to create a content calendar to help you plan out your posts. It will keep your messaging aligned with your business objectives.
DON’T over-promote your products and services.
Remember the “social” part of social media. While the various platforms are great for promoting your business, you don’t want your content to be too overly promotional. This will turn a lot of your friends and followers off. Aim to provide value to your audience. We’re talking about educational content, entertainment and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your company. Strike a balance between promotional and engaging content to keep your audience interested.
DO keep your posts short and sweet.
Remember that, in 2025, attention spans are shorter than ever. We live in a world of fast-scrolling social media users. That’s why it’s wise to keep your captions fairly concise and to the point. We generally think it’s best to keep your social media posts to 150 words or less, including all hashtags – give or take. If you need to convey more detailed information, consider linking to a blog post or a landing page on your website. We often do that ourselves! It’s smart to have a clear call to action (CTA) to guide your audience on what to do next.
DON’T forget to proofread before posting.
Grammatical errors and typos can make your business appear unprofessional. Always proofread your posts before publishing. If possible, have someone else review them as well. A small mistake can have a big impact. This is especially true if your post goes viral or is shared widely.
DON’T use generic stock photos.
Stock photos can be convenient. While many may look great, they can often feel inauthentic and can even hurt your credibility. Instead, use original images or videos that showcase your products, services and team. This adds a personal touch and helps your audience feel more connected to your brand.
