The Do’s And Don’ts Of Business Website Design

Is your company website performing as well as you wish it would? Remember that your site most often provides the very first impression of your business to the public. Needless to say, it’s important that it’s a good one. Is your site effectively garnering attention for your brand? Your website can turn curious browsers into loyal customers. However, poor design choices can drive potential clients away in seconds.

Whether you’re designing your company site from scratch or revamping it, there’s some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

DO make it mobile-friendly.

In 2025, it is absolutely vital that your company website looks and functions flawlessly on smartphones and tablets. According to Statista, by 2028, Canada’s mobile population will surpass 37 million users. “Canadians are also going wireless to browse the web,” reports their website, “Mobile internet user penetration in Canada currently stands at an all-time high of 95.2 percent, and this gradual switch from desktop to mobile is increasingly showing in Canada’s online traffic.”

DON’T use outdated design trends.

As you should be aware, trends change fast. Do you know which trends are no longer popular? It’s wise to avoid such design aspects as autoplaying music, Flash animation or overly stylized fonts that hurt accessibility. Instead, integrate a modern, minimalistic design with subtle interactivity. You don’t want to ignore those with disabilities, by the way. Make use of high-contrast colours, readable fonts, alt text for images and keyboard-friendly navigation so that all visitors can enjoy your site.

DO keep navigation simple.

Can your site’s visitors easily find what they need within seconds? In order to have an effective website, it’s important to use a clean, intuitive menu structure. There should also be a clear call to action on every page. We’re talking about easy-to-see tabs that read “Contact Us,” “Get a Quote,” or “View Our Services.” Your branding should also be very clear. Your brand’s logo, colours, fonts and messaging should be consistent throughout the site.

DON’T make it hard to contact you.

Ideally, every visitor of your site will want to get in touch with you directly. Is it easy to find out how to do just that? Include phone numbers, email addresses, a contact form and social media links in obvious locations. Have a clear “Contact” tab on your site’s homepage. You may want to have a fill-out form on your contact page to add yet another way to receive messages from potential customers. We do!
