Copper Theft In Ottawa Disrupts Bell Services

As leaders in Canada’s telecom industry, the Melo Technology team generally keeps its ear to the proverbial ground. So we couldn’t help but notice some particularly interesting posts coming from Bell Canada’s Bell Support X (formerly Twitter) account this month. A weekend outage in the Ottawa area made headlines back on May 6th.

Bell Canada’s X feed confirmed that extensive copper theft caused a major service disruption over the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. The incident highlighted an eyebrow-raising growing threat to Canada’s telecommunications infrastructure that affects both homes and businesses alike.

Vandals are stealing copper!

According to Bell Support, several customers in the Ottawa area experienced service interruptions due to significant damage to Bell’s network infrastructure. Who or what was the culprit, you ask? Thieves were targeting copper wire in telecommunication cables. It’s apparently a crime that has become alarmingly frequent.

Bell reported that their repair teams were quick to respond. They completed the necessary fixes, but the impact of the event echoes far beyond the capital.

Copper theft is a growing threat.

Bell reports that since January 2022, there have been more than 2,000 physical security incidents tied to copper theft. “Vandals typically cut down telecommunication cables from poles to steal the copper wire and then sell that copper for cash,” Bell posted.

While profitable for criminals, these actions are causing widespread harm. Outages affect both business and residential services. It compromises internet, TV and home phone services. There is also a disruption to critical emergency access, including 9-1-1. Make no mistake, copper theft is a form of vandalism. It is not only costly but dangerous. This is especially true when emergency services and healthcare systems depend on reliable communication networks.

Bell is calling for stronger laws.

In response to this continuing crisis, Bell is calling on the government to strengthen the Criminal Code. They want it to reflect the essential nature of telecom infrastructure. The company urges lawmakers to impose heftier penalties for network theft and vandalism. Their hope is to create a greater deterrent against future crimes. Until such legal changes are made, Bell says it will continue to collaborate with law enforcement and government partners to protect its network.

Bell is encouraging the public to play a role in prevention. If you witness suspicious activity near telecom infrastructure, report it to local authorities. For example, if you see individuals tampering with poles or cables, especially at odd hours, it’s worth calling it in.
