I am going to
attempt to tell you a little about myself. I was born on May 9, 1949, in the
hamlet now known as Santa Barbara da Ribeira Grande, on the Island of São
Miguel in the Archipelago of the Azores. This is part of Portugal, therefore the
explanation for the Portuguese Flag as well as the flag of the Azores. The
Canadian Flag is showing that I am in Canada and in the Province of Alberta. We
(my mother, my sister and one brother at the time) Immigrated to Canada on April
5, 1959. My father came to Canada ahead of us, on June 10, 1957. I was educated
in Northwestern Ontario. Yes I am proud to have a double heritage. I was born a
Portuguese and I am proud of that, just as I am proud of the fact that I am a
Canadian. I more or less grew up in Northwestern Ontario, where I still have some
friends. I still love the Town of Sioux Lookout, and am proud to have come from
there. When I was born I was given the name of João de Sousa da Costa
Melo, now I am simply known as João Melo by the Portuguese Community or
the English version of John Melo.
I worked in the Tanning Industry
(leather production) from 1965 until the plant closed down at the end of 2001. I am
proud of what I did as well as what I accomplished over the years. By the way this
is the world's oldest profession not the one that a lot of people say is. My hobbies
are Amateur Radio. My call sign is VE6JDD.
It seems that now I have more time to get to the radio. I enjoy "working HF",
I especially enjoy CW (morse code) even though I am not very good at it, but I
keep at it and I keep trying to improve. I am also operating a VHF repeater on
147.285MHz with a "+600 Offset". This repeater is operating under the call sign of
VE6OSM and is connected via "echolink" to VE5RI in Lloydminster, VE6WW in Camrose,
VE6SB in Elk Point and VE4JA in Russell, Manitoba. At this time VE6OSM is the western
end and VE4JA is the eastern end.I also enjoy working with computers, and fishing.
I have maintained a fluent knowledge of the Portuguese language (I read, write and
speak it) because I have always in one way or another been involved with the
Portuguese Community. I am also a Commissioner for Oaths for the Province of
Alberta.
